Saxophone Lessons Online VS In Person?
We believe online resources can be effective, but only as supplements to a real lesson program. The fact is, nothing can take the place of a real live human being instructor. There are several reasons why. First, online lessons don’t teach you what key you are in, or what the chords in that key are. Additionally they don’t teach you whether the chords follow a diatonic progression, (chords native to the key) or if there are other “non native” substitute chords. In addition, they don’t teach how the chord progression influences what scales, arpeggios, or licks may be played over those chords. Finally, they don’t answer questions, design custom programs, or make corrections on the spot. This can save you countless wasted hours practicing the wrong way. My Local Music Lessons does all these things and more!
What Kind Of Saxophone Reed:
One example of a simple item instructors can help with is choosing a reed. If you choose the wrong kind you will make your life difficult! First, for a beginner, choosing the correct reed is very important to having a positive experience. Also, if you choose the wrong kind of reed, it can hinder your progress. The difference in each brand of reed is minimal. However, learning how to tell a good reed from a bad reed is very important. One consideration for spotting bad reed is discoloration of the grain. Also, look for uneven thickness, fluctuating width of grain, or rougher than normal grain. In addition, reeds need to be wet or moist also and there are many other details involved. Getting some advice from your instructor can save tons of wasted time with a set up that isn’t optimized for you.
Music Theory For Saxophone:
You may be thinking “as a Sax player I don’t need to know music theory”. You may think, “I just read the sheet music”. However Saxophone is a jazz instrument. One of the cornerstones of jazz music is ability to improvise. In order to improvise you need to know what key you are in. Being aware of what intervals are available, what kind of scale to use, and how your melody impacts the whole band or ensemble is very important. All this info is included when you learn music theory. In addition, you will learn many techniques, and skills to give you a foundation. Once you have some understanding of key signatures, chords in a key, scales and arpeggios, you have a foundation to start building on. All great Saxophone players know music theory. We can help you get there!

Common Myth About Practicing Reading Notes:
When you look at a note on the score, you then need to look down to your hands in order to play it. When you look back up to the score, if you attempt to look ahead YOU WILL GET LOST! This will happen with each note read! This is because when you look back up to the score you don’t know what the next note is. What is more efficient is to purposely look back at the note(s) you JUST PLAYED and then quickly move your eyes to the next note. It’s easy to remember which note you just played because you just saw it and it is very familiar in your mind. By looking back to the score for THIS note, after having looked down at your hands, you will never get lost.
