“Piano Improv Classes Lakewood CO”
In this video I am playing my father’s piano in his house. This piano was a Godsend as I practiced on it a lot in my early twenty’s when I attended CCU. I did not know much later in life that I wanted to study music and earn a living in it so I am very glad we kept the piano!
Approach to Teaching Piano Improvisation
I teach piano lessons, voice lessons, guitar lessons, ukulele lessons, in the Greater Denver area including Denver, Englewood, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Littleton and Golden areas. In addition this article is about Piano Improv Classes in Lakewood CO. However this info applies to other instruments and locations I offer also.
When I teach students, I encourage them to warm up by playing whatever they like. For the sake of time of the lessons it has to be brief but I really enjoy watching a student improv something by using chords or melodies THEY have been working on. In this video there are a few things going on.
Piano Improv Classes Lakewood CO- Whats Going On?
First off, I am playing for the love of music. Sometimes and this is especially true if you are going to school for music, you can forget how much you love music because you are so bogged down in the study and practice of it. This certainly has happened to me in my college career on several occasions to the point where I questioned why I was studying music. These improv sessions helped keep me sane.
The second thing that is happening is I am thinking of music theory as I practice. I am playing mostly in the key of a minor but I am throwing in other chords and notes that do not belong. I also am thinking a bit in terms of style as I play notes and rhythms that are not usual. While all this is going on I am thinking of scales, keys, and chords and how they connect.
Rewards For Studying Music Theory
This was the greatest reward for all my hours and hours of studying music theory. I began to see the connections. If you study music theory long enough and use in on an instrument, you begin to realize how intricate music can be. You now have more expression of what you feel and imagine. This too was an immense reward. Music is my way of expressing myself beyond words. When I improvise I can start to express myself more and more and use my mind to connect notes together.
If you are a musician no matter what your skill don’t forget to play and improvise for the joy of music as what you play ultimately is your mind and emotions expressing themselves.
