Karl Summers Intro Video
Karl began playing the bass guitar at age sixteen and picked up the guitar shortly after. His eclectic musical tastes are evident in the projects he’s been involved in. These include jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, metal, bluegrass, and country. At Indiana University, he learned how to sing and play the piano while studying composition from jazz legend David Baker. Later, Karl took lessons from Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik after college.
Karl began teaching guitar at elementary schools in Bloomington, Indiana after he graduated from college. He has been teaching consistently ever since and continued at School of Rock in Boulder, Colorado. He now teaches privately in conjunction with picking up live concert gigs in the Denver and Boulder areas at My Local Music Lessons.
Karl moved to Colorado when he was twenty-five and was immediately picked up by the then popular Technicolor Tone Factory. Since then, he has performed on-stage with Umphrey’s McGee, Stanley Jordan, and Robert Randolph. In addition he has been headlining the Fox, Gothic, Bluebird, and Oriental Theaters. His projects have also supported a number of notable artists including Snarky, Puppy, Cory Henry, the Wailers, the Flaming Lips, Ghostland Observatory, Dopapod, Twiddle, Tauk, the Main Squeeze, and members of Jurassic 5. He currently performs with local funk outfits Legato and Envy Alo, and as a bassist-for-hire has performed with members of Dopapod, the Magic Beans, and many others. He also aspires to become an audio engineer, to mix and master many albums.
