We Offer Balanced Lessons Programs:

First, we believe in a balance between creating a solid foundation and how that information applies to YOUR favorite songs and styles. Next, learning the context of how a technique, or skill, or piece of theory knowledge fits in a familiar song is important. This will help your understanding why it works and help you memorize it. Also, we encourage you to choose a playlist of songs that represent the styles you are interested in. Our programs will accommodate your favorite songs! Finally, your instructor will go over your ability, favorite styles and goals, and will create a step by step program to get you there!

Electric vs Acoustic – Which is Best For You?

Making this choice has a lot to do with what styles you are interested in. However, not everyone knows this going into lessons. First, however I would like to de bunk a common misconception. Many people think that there is some reason they should start with acoustic and then “graduate” to electric. This is not a true statement. In fact for many guitarists, starting on electric is the best option, and this would be based on if they have a strong affinity for certain styles, and or have specific goals oriented towards one or the other.

Your Ability and Goals

Having a sense of your ability and goals will help you as you decide what type of instructor will work best for you. If you are a complete beginner you do not need to seek out the “Jazz GuitarGuru” in your town. This would be a waste of time. You need an instructor who can cater to your needs, be patient and supportive, and help you get the basics while having fun! If you are more intermediate or advanced you may need someone who has a particular skill set related to the styles you like.

Local Guitar Players, Singer Songwriters, and Open Mic Nights

Once you have been playing for a while, you may be tempted to try playing in front of people. Your teacher can help you organize your songs, and evaluate which ones are best suited for your goal. Trying out songs is like trying on clothes. It can take some trial and error to find out which songs “fit” you the best. Sometimes this has to do with finding the right key for your voice. This is not necessarily going to be in the same key as the original artist if its a cover song. With our programs you will learn the music theory necessary to transpose songs in to the appropriate key.

Open Mic Night Etiquette:

Its important you understand some of the basic etiquette it its your first time going to an open mic night. First, be prepared, with your songs well rehearsed. Nothing kills a performance like nerves, and the best way to lower your anxiety is knowing you are well prepared. Next, go with the goal of supporting other musicians, before and after your set. Also, try to bring some friends to support you and the other musicians. In addition, some business cards are helpful. Anyone can set up a page on Reverb Nation, which can host a few songs, bio, photo etc…in case you meet other musicians you want to connect with. Finally this also gives you a way to offer other booking agents or venues a way to check out who you are and what you do. Most of all have FUN!
